Yongin Folk Village 1

Text: On May 17 we spent the day at the Korean Folk Village in Yongin. The extensive grounds feature restored buildings, live performances, and craftsmen demonstrating traditional manufacturing methods.

"The Tale of the Reproduced Bedwetter" Many of the exhibits in the folk village include props that you can pose with to take pictures (grinding grain with a mortar and pestle, or flaying your friend on a whipping-bench). We came across this winnowing fan next to a sign reading, "This is a reproduced bed wetter. Please put it back after use." We were baffled, but later learned that a child who wet the bed would have to wear a winnowing fan on his head. Visitors were invited to pose with this one, as long as they returned it when they were finished.

I got the title from a Folk Village post card. I scanned the letters and enlarged them quite a bit, then traced them onto burgundy Canson using the graphite transfer method. It's visually appealing even for those who can't read it.

The folk village is really a fascinating place. We could have taken a lot more pictures than we did (I'd like to go back again and rectify that). If you go to the train station in Suwon you can get a shuttle bus from there. We took the bus from Chonan to Suwon, which was definitely a mistake. Once we got off the expressway we had to pass through the entire city (traffic was bad) to get to the terminal. We should have taken the train.

Quite few period films and TV shows are shot at the folk village. There was a crew filming something while we were there.

The little girl in the pink hanbok was there with her brother, also in pink hanbok. They looked so cute I wanted to get a picture with them. The boy wandered off in a fit of boredom and the girl didn't look too happy either. We find this picture amusing for the bright plaid jacket in the background.

The folk village has a homepage. The English index doesn't seem to work.
