Song Gwang Sa temple

Text: Monday, May 5, we went out to Song Gwang Sa temple. We had planned to go anyway, but when we learned that the branch was hiking over the mountain for Children's Day we decided to go with them. We rode a crowded bus over an hour into the countryside to Jo Gye San mountain. The temple was decorated with lanterns for upcoming Buddha's Birthday celebrations. Behind the temple we found a stand of bamboo.

Background Paper: German ingres from Daniel Smith

Pens: Micron black (01)

The bamboo cut-out was my own design. I hit upon the idea of layering the leaves by cutting the shapes in the journaling block so the background paper showed through, and then gluing another leaf over the top of it.

This was the only time we got to hear a temple bell being rung. Every temple has a bell and many of them are very old and impressive. They do not have clappers inside, but are sounded by striking them with a swinging log that is suspended next to the bell (see animated graphic).

We saw bamboo in a few different places but it wasn't very common.
