Kyoung Ju

Observatory/ Museum

Text: In June we had another three-day weekend (Friday, June 5 was Memorial Day), so we took a trip to Kyoung Ju. Friday morning we took a train to Taegu and caught a bus from there. Kyoung Ju was the capital of the Shilla kingdom, 57 BC-935 AD, and is full of historic sites and artifacts. We arrived in town at lunch time, so we got something to eat and then found a place to stay (a nice yogwan for 23,000 won a night). We dropped off our luggage, put on some sunblock, and went to explore the city. Our first stop was Chom Song Dae, Asia's oldest observatory, dating from the 600's.

(Page 2) Anapchi is a man-made pond built by one of the Shilla kings. The pond and pavilions have been recently restored. The Kyoung Ju National Museum includes an exhibit of artifacts excavated from the pond. The famous Emille Bell is displayed outside the museum's main exhibition hall. It is over a thousand years old and weighs 23 tons.

The title came from a "Legend" hand in a calligraphy book. I scanned the letters and enlarged them.
